How to Troubleshoot a Lawnmower Ignition

Lawnmowers, if properly winterized before being put away for the cold season, will often start up in the spring with little to no issue at all. A neglected machine, however, or one with a faulty part may have issues starting due to ignition problems. Maintain all the fluids and ignition parts for a smooth start. Knowing the correct troubleshooting steps for ignition issues prevents hours of frustration and pulling of the starter cable to no avail.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the fuel cap and inspect the level of gasoline in the engine. Fill the engine to the top if it is empty. Remove any fuel that has sat in the engine for more than one month.

    • 2

Remove the spark plug with a spark plug wrench. Inspect the end for signs of rust. Replace the spark plug if it is rusted.

    • 3

Remove the screw from the carburetor cover. Spray the inside with carburetor cleaner and wipe it clean.

    • 4

Turn the mower onto its side with the oil tank under the air filter. Place a drain pan under the mower. Remove the oil plug nut from the bottom of the unit and drain the oil from the machine. Fill the engine with new oil.

Check all the bolts on the engine and tighten as necessary.
