How to Make a Plant Box

Plant boxes are a portable alternative to growing vegetables and flowers in the ground. Lighter and less fragile than ceramic pots, wooden planters are an affordable, attractive solution for container gardening on apartment balconies and patios. You can use pressure treated wood for plant boxes meant for flowers, but only use cedar when growing edibles. Cedar is a naturally pest and water resistant wood ideal for outdoor growing.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and mark the 4-by-4 plank at 2-foot intervals. Saw the plank at these markings to make the four corner posts.

    • 2

Measure and mark the 1-by-6 piece to make 18 20-inch intervals. Saw the plank at these markings to make 18 side pieces. These will make the planter's wall.

    • 3

Measure and mark the 1-by-6 board to make six 19-inch intervals. Saw the plank at these markings to make six floor pieces. Saw one of the floor pieces to reduce its width to 2 1/2 inches. These will make the planter's base.

    • 4

Measure and mark the 1-by-6 board to make four 4-by-4 squares. Saw these squares to make four caps for the corner posts.

    • 5

Measure and mark the 1-by-6 board to make two 16-by-2 1/4-inch rectangles. Saw these pieces to make trim for the short sides of the planter.

    • 6

Measure and mark the 1-by-6 board to make two 32-by-2 1/4-inch rectangles. Saw these pieces to make trim for the long sides of the planter.

    • 7

Measure and mark the 1 1/4-by-6-inch plank to make four 16-by-5 1/4-inch pieces. These will make the rails for the short sides of the planter.

    • 8

Measure and mark the 1 1/4-by-6-inch plank to make four 32-by-5 1/4-inch pieces. These will be the rails for the long sides of the planter.

    • 9

Measure and mark the 2-by-2 plank at two 32-inch intervals. Saw the plank at these markings to make the floor supports for the long sides of the planter.

    • 10

Measure and mark the rest of the 2-by-2 at two 16-inch intervals. Saw the plank at these markings to make the floor supports for the short sides.

    • 11

Sand all the cut edges of the wood to make them smooth.

    • 12

Mark screw locations on each post. On the sides of the legs aligned with the short sides of the planter, mark 2 1/2 inches up from the bottom, 2 1/4 inches down from the top, 6 1/4 inches up from the bottom and 6 inches down from the top. On the sides of the legs aligned with the long sides of the planter, mark 4 inches up from the bottom, 3 inches down from the top, 6 1/2 inches up from the bottom and 5 1/2 inches down from the top.

    • 13

Drill holes in these markings halfway through the boards with a 3/8-inch drill bit.

    • 14

Place the side rails against the posts, 1 inch down from the top and 2 1/2 inches up from the bottom. Screw the rails in place with 3-inch screws.

    • 15

Drill two equidistant holes through the tops and bottoms of each side and floor piece so the holes are 1/2 inch away from the edges of the boards.

    • 16

Line the side pieces vertically inside the side rails so the top and bottom edges of the side pieces are flush with the rails. Screw the side pieces in place using 1 1/2-inch screws.

    • 17

Drill two equidistant holes in each of the short floor supports so that each hole is 2 inches away from the closest edge. Drill three equidistant holes in each of the longer floor supports so that the outer two holes are 2 inches away from the closest edge. Screw these floor supports in place to the bottom rails, using 1 1/2-inch screws.

    • 18

Lay the floor pieces over the floor supports so there is 1/2 inch of space between each board to allow water drainage. Screw the floor pieces in place with 1 1/2-inch screws.

    • 19

Drill six equidistant holes along the broad side of each long trim piece. Drill three equidistant holes along the broad side of each short trim piece. Screw the trim in place along the top edge of the planter, using 1 1/2-inch screws.

    • 20

Drill a hole in the center of each post cap. Screw the caps in place at the top of each post.
