How to Troubleshoot a Small Engine on a Weed Eater

Weed Eater models generally run on a small, 2-cycle engine. These engines use a fuel and oil mixture to run a small trimmer head on the end of the unit. Regular maintenance is needed to keep the unit running properly. Failure to do so may lead to issues with the unit. Troubleshooting a small Weed Eater engine does not require a lot of expertise due to it's size and few moving parts.

Open the fuel tank and inspect the fuel level. Fill the engine with gasoline and 2-cycle engine oil if empty. Remove fuel that is more than one month old.

    • 2

Turn the switch to the "On" position. Feel to see whether the switch is loose and replace if necessary.

Remove the spark plug from the unit using a socket wrench. Inspect the spark plug for signs of rust. Replace it if necessary.

Look inside the gas tank and remove the fuel filter with a pair of pliers. Inspect the filter for signs of dirt. Replace if necessary.
