How to Change a Starter Cable on My Weed Eater Mower

Weed eater mowers or gas trimmers have a starter cord. The starter cord moves a flywheel that creates the spark necessary for the engine to start running. After several seasons of use, the starter cord on your weed eater may become brittle or begin to decay. One hard pull may be enough to break the cord off. Without the cord, it is impossible to start the engine. However, you can replace the cord with a little work.

Instructions

    • 1

Loosen the screw holding the throttle cable to the engine and remove the cable.

    • 2

Unscrew the air filter from the unit and remove the filter.

    • 3

Remove the cable from the spark plug by pulling on it. Unscrew the spark plug using a socket wrench.

    • 4

Remove the screws holding the clutch assembly to the unit using a torx screwdriver. Pull up on the cover and disconnect the wires from the underside by pulling on the connectors.

    • 5

Remove the screw holding the cover on the pulley inside the housing. Lift off the cover.

    • 6

Cut the cord just below the handle if it is still intact.

    • 7

Insert the new cord into the hole on the pulley and tie a knot to hold it in place.

    • 8

Wrap the cord clockwise around the pulley, keeping the cord as taut as possible. Pull 10 inches of the cord from the housing, through the hole.

    • 9

Wrap the cord around your hand to make a loop. Pull on the cord six to seven times to create tension from the spring.

    • 10

Insert the string into the handle and tie a knot.

    • 11

      Reassemble the housing.
