How to Feed Grape Juice to Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds are tiny birds with long beaks used for feeding on the nectar of plants and flowers. One hummingbird species, the bee hummingbird, is the smallest extant species of bird on Earth. Hummingbirds hover over their food while feeding, flapping their wings in excess of 12 beats per second. Hummingbirds will also feed on most sweet, nectar-like substances that are made available in a man-made feeder. Hummingbirds especially enjoy grape juice, which can be easily prepared in a man-made hummingbird feeder.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the hummingbird feeder and rinse out any residual nectar or juice from prior feedings. Clear the absorbent pad or feeding tube using purified water.

    • 2

Fill the feeder with grape juice. Make sure to use only 100 percent juice. Wipe the excess away from the outside of the feeder.

    • 3

Test the feeder to ensure the juice is available for the hummingbirds. Dab a finger on the feeding pad or feeding tube to verify juice is flowing from the reservoir to the feeding apparatus.

    • 4

Place the feeder near the garden, close to flowers, vines and other plants. Hummingbirds are especially attracted to azalea, morning glory, mimosa, lantana, cypress vine and yucca plants.

    • 5

Watch from a window nearby the feeder to witness the hummingbirds feed on the grape juice.
