How to Cut Hay for Baling & Horses

Hay can be used for many different purposes on a farm. For example, you can use the hay for your horses as bedding in the stable and as nourishment. In the meantime, the hay needs to be in bales, which allows you to keep the hay neatly stacked in the barn instead of loose out in the field. Before you can use the hay for baling or for your horses, you need to cut it.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the cutting knives on your disc mower. If any appear dull or damaged, snap them off and replace them. You can purchase replacement knives from the manufacturer at little cost.

    • 2

Attach the disc mower to your tractor. The tractor provides the power for the mower. Because rocks and sticks can fly up from the knives, the tractor you use should have a cab for safety purposes.

    • 3

Move your tractor to the edge of the hay field in the direction that you want the hay to be cut in.

    • 4

Start moving. As you move over the hay field, the knives on the disc mower will spin, allowing them to cut neatly through the hay.
