Troubleshooting a John Deere LX172 Lawn Tractor

The John Deere LX 172 is a personal use lawn tractor. Like other John Deere mowers, it has a large mower deck that makes cutting the lawn quicker and easier than when cutting with a push or rotating mower. Although reliable if well maintained, you may eventually experience an issue with your John Deere mower over time. Instructions

  1. Engine Problems

    • 1

Remove the fuel tank plug then drain all of the fuel from the system if the gas is older than a month or appears dirty. Drain the fuel into an approved fuel can.

    • 2

Take off the cover from the fuel filter with a screwdriver and inspect the filter for dirt.

    • 3

Place the choke in the full speed position if the engine is cutting out. Have the carburetor professionally adjusted if the throttle is not engaging properly.

    • 4

Unscrew the spark plug with a wrench if the unit is cutting out or not starting. Inspect the spark plug for rust or dirt. Replace it if necessary.

    • 5

Check all of the electrical component connections on the unit for breaks or wear that may cause shorts.

    • 6

Inspect the cooling fins on the unit. Blow out the fins with compressed air to remove any dirt. Check the air cleaner element by the air filter for clogs. Inspect the air intake screen for clogs and clean it with compressed air as well.

    Cutting Problems

    • 7

Lower the deck to its lowest setting.

    • 8

Start the mower and engage the mower blades. Listen for any loud noises or rattling. Replace the blades if the assembly is shaking.

    • 9

Inspect the hair pins that hold the deck to the unit. Replace them if necessary.

    • 10

Clean all dirt and debris from the underside of the unit and the belts to prevent any clogging or blockages.
