How to Adjust a Larger Forward Drive Replacement Belt for a Troy-Bilt Tiller

A Troy-Bilt tiller can be useful for tilling large areas of dirt. It can break up dirt much more quickly and easily than a person doing it by hand with a shovel or hoe, but it also requires some routine maintenance from time to time. If you have recently replaced the belt on your Troy-Bilt Tiller with a larger belt, it is probably somewhat loose and needs to be adjusted in order for the machine to operate properly.

Things You'll Need

  • 9/16” wrench or crescent wrench
  • Belt-adjustment tool

Instructions

    • 1

Move the drive lever to the “Neutral” position and insert the belt-adjustment tool that came with your tiller into the hole on the side of the adjustment block so that the slotted end is facing down. (The adjustment block is attached to the belt and roller.)

    • 2

Slide the drive lever into the “Forward” position. Hold the lever in this position while you loosen the bolt at the back of the adjustment block with the wrench. Do not remove the bolt; rather, loosen it enough so that the block can move freely.

    • 3

Push the drive lever down to tighten the belt or up to loosen it.

    • 4

Hold the drive lever still while you tighten the bolt with the wrench and then remove the adjustment tool.

    • 5

Insert the slotted end of the adjustment tool between the clutch roller and the upright bracket to test whether the belt is adjusted properly; the slotted end should barely fit between the roller and bracket. If the slotted portion won’t fit, the belt is too loose; if the larger portion of the tool will fit, the belt is too tight.
