Huskee Rear Tine Tiller Tires Won't Turn

Compared to front tine tillers, rear tine tillers are easier to handle and control, which makes the work of aerating and loosening the soil in your garden much easier. In addition, because power is transferred from the engine to the wheels, you can tackle bigger jobs like cutting through sod. The tires on rear tine tillers are big and have large treads that provide better traction. Huskee rear tine tillers are made by MTD, and there are several reasons why the tires might not turn.
  1. Clevis Pin

    • A clevis pin, which is also known as a link pin or hinge pin, is a type of fastener used to attach the depth stake to the tine shield of your Huskee rototiller. If the tires on your tiller won’t turn, the clevis pin might be missing. Consult your owner’s manual for the part number of the missing pin. Your owner’s manual will also give instructions for replacing the pin.

    Control Cable

    • Another reason why your tiller tires might not turn is if the control cable isn’t adjusted correctly. Place your rototiller against a wall to check the adjustment of the drive clutch. Release the tine clutch lever and make sure the drive clutch lever is in neutral. Start the engine, but if you notice any motion, shut it off immediately and readjust the hex nuts on the cable bracket. Make sure you don’t tighten the cable too much or it might break.

    Belt

    • If your wheels hesitate when turning, you might need to adjust the tension on your belt. You can do this by loosening the hex nuts at the cable bracket that is found on the handle. Release the clutch lever and adjust the bottom nut first. Leave a slight amount of slack in the control wire. Tightening it too much could cause it to break. When you’re through, tighten the upper nut against the bracket. If the wheels on your tiller don’t turn at all, the belt may be worn and will need to be replaced.

    Shifting

    • Improper shifting can also cause the wheels not to turn. Moving your tiller slightly forward and then back, when shifting into forward or reverse, will synchronize the gears. To shift into forward wheels and tine drive, you will need to push forward slightly on the gear selection handle while you engage the clutch handle. Release the clutch handle to stop forward movement and tine drive. Your owner’s manual will give you more information about how to best shift your specific model.
