Group Like Items

• To organize your shed, group like things together. Things like paint cans and other painting supplies should be close to each other. Holiday decorations should have their own place too. Your tools should be together and your nuts and bolts should be in the same place too. It's best if you can take everything out of the shed to evaluate your space and determine your storage and organization needs.

Organizing

• There are plenty of organizational supplies available to make your shed more functional. Some of these items are shelves, pegboard and pegs, storage bins and tool holders. Check your hardware or home improvement store for ideas for storage organization.
  Decide where you want to put shelves. You can either attach them to the walls or choose freestanding shelves, or a combination of the two. In smaller sheds, built-in shelves will save space. If your shed is large, buy or build a work bench that has drawers where you can store things.
  Install pegboard and insert pegs. You can hang all sorts of tools and supplies from a peg board. This frees up workbench space and shelving while allowing easy access to a lot of supplies.
  In general, small items should go on shelves and in drawers. They shouldn't be stored on the floor. Larger items should be stacked and stored on the floor. Leave space around each type of item so that you can get to it easily. Part of organizing is to make it so that you have easy access to all of your supplies.

Storing

• Get jars or cabinets made especially for storing small items. Craft stores carry small storage cabinets that are perfect for storing small items like screws, nails, nuts and bolts. If you only have a few of these items, baby food jars or other small jars work well for storing sorted items.
  Install a tool holder on the wall. This is the perfect place to put all your tools like shovels, brooms and rakes. A tool holder will keep your tools upright and off the floor and make it easy for you to find your tools when you need them.
  Get airtight storage bins for your holiday decorations or other supplies that can go in large bins. Using airtight bins will help keep bugs out of your decorations. Otherwise you could bring bugs into your house when you bring in decorations. Bugs can also damage your decorations.
  Put a little thought and planning into organizing your shed. Think about what you use the most, and make sure it is easily accessible. Organizing your shed will also help you take better care of your tools and supplies because they won't be piled on top of each other.
