You can add shelves to a workshop by either installing them directly onto a wall or purchasing shelves that are free-standing. Shelves help maximize storage space by keeping items off of the floor. The trick to shelves, though, is to not allow items to become crammed onto them. To help organize your space, add labels to the shelves, and place boxes or drawers on the shelves to hold small items, such as cords, boxes of nails and other items.
A pegboard can be hung on a wall and hooks screwed into the holes so that tools and similar items can be hung on the hooks for easy access. This allows all tools and handheld items to be seen clearly and easily reached. Hooks can also be used to hang hoses, T-squares, coffee mugs and other items that are convenient to have readily available.
Magnetic strips can easily be applied to walls and workbenches or above tables to hold small items, including nails, screws, small tools, pens, tacks, safety pins and any other item that could otherwise be easily lost but is often needed. These strips can be purchased in rolls with adhesive on one side; alternatively, they can be glued to a surface.
A workshop should feature an item, such as a workbench or table, that provides ample counter top space on which you can spread out plans, parts and projects. A two-level workbench, like a large table with a second level attached or shelves set on top of the table or secured to the wall 6 inches above the table's surface, allows project pieces, instruction manuals or designs to be kept separate and easily viewable. Drawers or cabinets beneath a workbench also help to organize writing utensils, notepads and other small items.
