How to Start Grape Vines From Seed

While grape vines are commonly propagated from cuttings rather than from seeds, it is possible to germinate grape seeds and then to plant them. The process of growing a grape vine from seeds rather than from cuttings is time consuming, but allows you to see the entire lifespan of the vine from seed to maturity.

  Dampen the peat moss and press the grape seeds into the moss.

  Place the peat moss containing the grape seed into a resealable plastic bag and seal the bag.

  Place the peat moss in the refrigerator for at least three months. During this time, check the peat moss regularly to ensure that it does not dry out. The peat moss should be damp, but not soggy.

  Fill seed trays with a rich potting soil. Remove the seeds from the bags and press them into the soil, lightly covering each seed. Keep the temperature at about 70 degrees F during the day. Viable seeds will germinate within two to three weeks.

  Transfer the seedlings to larger pots when they are between 1 and 2 inches high. Set the new roots firmly in the soil, leaving only a hint of green to sprout above the soil. North Dakota State University Extension suggests a 1-gallon pot, which will allow the grape vine to grow deep roots. The material of the pot does not matter.

  Place the pots in a sunny location. Ideally, they will receive at least six hours of full sun every day. If they do not, a grow lamp may be used to supplement their light.

  Keep the soil moist to the touch, but not soggy.
