The standard peppermint carnation typically grows to be 18 to 24 inches tall. A single semi-spherical bloom is produced at the top of each stem. The stems are strong and the fragrant flowers last for many days, making the peppermint carnation an excellent choice for cut flowers and corsages.
The mini peppermint carnation, Dianthus caryophyllus dana, is similar in appearance to the standard variety. The plant produces double blossoms 1 to 2 inches across on multi-branched stems with many blossoms per spray. The mini peppermint carnation is a colorful, fragrant and popular filler for large bouquets.
Like the mini, the dwarf peppermint carnation bears many flowers on each stem. The plant of this hybridized variety has many branches from the main stem, making it a popular specimen for bedding applications. The dwarf peppermint carnation has full, dark green foliage and grows to only 6 to 8 inches in height and is widely used in container planting.
