How to Grow Ground Orchids in Containers

More than 20,000 species of orchids are in existence, most of which grow and thrive in tropical climates, although they can be found in a wide range of climates. The ground orchid, also known as the terrestrial orchid, is a perennial variety that blooms year-round. It is one of the few varieties of orchid that uses soil as its growing medium. Because ground orchids grow in soil, they can be planted in any standard container that supports soil and water, just as any other type of flower.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix 2 parts ground soil, 1 part sand, 1 part sawdust and 2 parts compost to create a growing medium for the ground orchids. Combine these ingredients thoroughly in a bucket.

    • 2

Transfer the soil into short clay pots with holes at the bottom. Clay pots provide more effective drainage, which is ideal for orchids. Do not press the soil into the pot. Simply dump enough soil into the clay pot to fill it within 2 inches of the top.

    • 3

Push each orchid tuber into the center of the soil so that the top of the tuber is roughly 2 inches beneath the soil. Move the soil back over the top of the tuber and press lightly to secure the tuber into place.

    • 4

Water the planted orchid tuber immediately until the soil is moist throughout. Place the container with the orchid tuber in a somewhat shaded location that receives partial sun throughout the day. Avoid locations that receive direct sunlight all day.

    • 5

Let the soil in the container dry out completely before watering the plant again. Continue this watering regimen throughout the summer.
