How to Grow Orchids in a Shower

Shower areas can sometimes provide the environmental conditions orchids need to thrive and produce flowers. Most varieties of orchids require bright indirect light, moderately warm temperatures and high humidity. If your shower area has a window ledge next to a frosted glass window, or if you hang your orchid near such a window, this condition could be beneficial for a phalaenopsis, dendrobium, cattleya or cymbidium orchid. You might need to heat your bathroom in winter to maintain the temperature an orchid needs and you’ll want to prevent the potting medium from remaining constantly wet.

Instructions

    • 1

Research the needs of your specific orchid variety. Some types of orchids can tolerate more light than others, and some don’t mind cooler temperatures. Then evaluate the conditions such as light and temperature in your shower. Match the conditions in your shower with the needs of the correct orchid.

    • 2

Plant your orchid in a pot with a drainage hole and use a special bark formulated for orchids. Consider using a plastic pot to prevent breakage if your orchid should fall.

    • 3

Place your potted orchid near a window that will allow it to receive bright indirect or filtered light. If your window receives direct sun for even part of the day, locate your orchid far enough from the window to prevent sunburn.

    • 4

Situate your orchid in a spot where it will not fill with water every time you use the shower. A bit of spray is fine and the humidity of daily showers will benefit your orchid, but allow the potting bark to dry slightly before you water it again.

    • 5

Control the temperature in your shower based on your specific orchid’s needs.

    • 6

Fertilize your orchid every two weeks, using a special orchid plant food with an N-P-K ratio of 30-10-10. Follow product instructions for correct mixing and application.
