Different Ways of Designing Flowers

There are all different types of flower design. Ultimately the design comes down to your personal preference. Some of the different design ideas include color, shape, blooming time or vignettes. The choice of design will depend on what the design is being used for and the types of flowers available.
  1. Vingette

    • Design flowers by creating vignettes. Plant flowers in containers and then arrange them in different styles. A triangle design will contain a dominant flower or pot elements surrounded by smaller flowers. The tallest flower is placed towards the back with other, smaller plants around the sides and in front. A triangle vignette in pots can easily be changed by rearranging the pots or by adding more pots to the design.

    Blooming Time

    • Choose the flowers in your design based on when they bloom. You can choose flowers that bloom at different times, therefore the flower design of the garden can be done so that there are flowers blooming at all times. Several perennials will bloom throughout the entire spring and summer while others will only bloom for a very short period of time. Use annual flowers to supplement and enhance the design each year as annuals will live for a season and then die. These flowers bloom all year season long.

    Color

    • Use color when planning the flower design. Different colors are associated with different emotions and you can create a garden based on one color shade or you can plant out where you want specific colors in your design. Colors such as greens, blues and violets create a cooler atmosphere while reds, oranges and yellows seem hotter. There are many different color schemes that you can use when designing flowers. The common schemes include triad schemes, tetrad schemes, split complementary schemes, complementary schemes, analogues schemes and monochromatic schemes.

    Direction

    • Choose a specific direction for your flower design. A horizontal arrangement will use shallow containers with longer branches creating the main line. Vertical arrangements will stick up out of a container and require hot glue or a secure base to steady the design. Other different types of shapes include a crescent, triangle, oval or the lazy S arrangement.
