How to Paint Airondack Furniture

Adirondack furniture is a classic style of outdoor furnishings. The furniture can be painted to match the exterior of the home or as an accent color. The color is a matter of preference by the owner. Traditionally, the furniture has been painted hunter green at mountain lodges and white at beach or coastal cottages. No matter what color or style you choose to finish the Adirondack furniture in, the process to finish it will be the same.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the entire piece of furniture with 180-grit sandpaper until the wood is completely smooth.

    • 2

Clean the dust left by the sandpaper off with a tack cloth. Leaving dust on the surface of wood will result in a poor quality finish.

    • 3

Prime the furniture piece with an even coat of alkyd primer using a paintbrush. Allow the primer to dry for 24 hours.

    • 4

Sand the alkyd primer coat lightly with 180-grit sandpaper. Always sand with the grain of the wood. Sand lightly to avoid sanding through the primer.

    • 5

Brush an even coat of top coat exterior grade paint with a paintbrush. Paint in the same direction as the wood grain. Apply a second coat if desired. Allow four hours between coats.
