How to Build a Kitchen Tower

A kitchen tower is an enclosed stepping stool made for small children who want to help in the kitchen. This is a smart alternative to the less-safe option of standing on a chair. An adjustable tower will not take up valuable kitchen space. Create easy access for your child by incorporating a ladder on the sides of the tower.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the 1-inch wide edges of four 1-by-2-inch pine boards, 38 inches long, at four places: 7 inches, 11 inches, 15 inches and 19 inches from one end. These boards become the legs of the tower, and the marks become the ladder rungs.

    • 2

Attach a 15-inch long, 1-by-2-inch pine board to each marked spot with 2 1/2-inch wood screws on two of the four leg boards. The rungs must be flush with the leg boards and now signify the bottom of the kitchen tower.

    • 3

Attach one of the two remaining leg boards to the open ends of the ladder rungs with 2 1/2-inch wood screws, creating two sets of ladders at the four marks on the board at 7 inches, 11 inches, 15 inches and 19 inches from the bottom.

    • 4

Slip a 1-by-2-inch pine board, 15 inches long, between the two sets of legs at the open top end, so the 15-inch board is flush with the ends of the legs. Attach these boards to the ladder legs with 2 1/2-inch wood screws.

    • 5

Connect the two ladders to each other with a 1-by-2-inch pine board, 16 1/2 inches long, at 8 inches from the bottom, using 2 1/2-inch wood screws.

    • 6

Connect the ladders with 1-by-8-inch pine support boards, 16 1/2 inches long on each side of the tower, using 2 1/2-inch wood screws. Place these support boards so the tops of the boards are 21 inches from the bottom of the tower.

    • 7

Insert a 1-by-3-inch pine board, 16 1/2 inches long, between the two ladders at the top and secure with 2 1/2-inch wood screws, completing the sides of the kitchen tower.

    • 8

Lay two 1-by-8-inch pine wood boards, 18 inches in length, flat on your worktable. Set the boards evenly next to each other so the 18-inch long sides are touching, making the kitchen helper tower platform.

    • 9

Attach two 15-inch long, 1-by-2-inch pine boards, centered in a perpendicular fashion, across the ends of the two platform boards, using 2 1/2-inch wood screws.

    • 10

Cut two 1-by-3-inch pine boards, 3 inches long, from one corner to its diagonal opposite, using a table saw.

    • 11

Attach the 1-by-3-inch pine triangles to two 24-inch long 1-by-3-inch pine boards at 3 inches in from each end with 2 1/2-inch wood screws. The triangles become feet for the tower and must be placed on the same side of the 24-inch pine boards.

    • 12

Attach the 24-inch pine boards to the bottom of the tower, flush with the bottom of the legs, with 2 1/2-inch wood screws.
