How to Build a Tiered Strawberry Tower

Tiered strawberry towers are ideal for gardeners who are short on space, but still want strawberries. Tiered planters for strawberries also have the advantage of keeping fruit off the ground, which prevents rot and deters pests. They also keep the sometimes-unruly strawberry plant from wreaking havoc in the garden. A tiered strawberry planter is equally at home in the garden as on a sunny porch or patio.

Instructions

    • 1

Form two planks of 50-by-1-by-12-inch lumber and two planks of 48-by-1-by-12-inch lumber into a square box shape, with the ends of the 48-inch planks on the inside of the 50-inch planks, so that the overall dimensions are 50 inches on all sides of the square.

    • 2

Glue the corner joints of the box together with carpenter’s glue and let it dry before securing the box together with three 1 ½ inch deck screws driven through the sides of the 50-inch planks into the ends of the 48-inch planks.

    • 3

Repeat the procedure with two 20-inch, 18-inch, 10-inch and 8-inch planks of 1-by-12-inches, so you have three square boxes, one 50 inches on all sides, one 20 inches on all sides and one 10 inches on all sides.

    • 4

Sit the 50-inch box in the garden where you want to set up the strawberry tower. It should be a position with full sun and reasonably protected from the wind.

    • 5

Fill the box with potting soil and press it down firmly, enough to compact it without forming a crust.

    • 6

Place the 20-inch box centered on top of the soil in the 50-inch box and fill will potting soil, then repeat with the 10-inch box. There should be enough room for one plant in the top tier, six to eight in the middle and 10 to 12 in the bottom tier.
