DIY Acrylic Desk

Acrylic sheets are a lightweight yet strong material used to construct everything from fish tanks to furniture. The idea of working with acrylic sheets might be intimidating, but it requires just a little more effort than working with traditional building supplies. Building an acrylic desk, for example, requires four pieces of acrylic and a sealing medium. Construct your own acrylic desk in an afternoon, and then use it in a dorm room, a child’s room or as a conversation piece for your office.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover your work surface with a clean tarp to protect the acrylic from scratches. Place a piece of 29-by-30-by-3/8-inch acrylic sheet flat on your work surface.

    • 2

Place a 30-by-48-by-3/8-inch acrylic sheet at a 90-degree angle to the smaller piece, which is resting on the work surface. Place the larger piece so the 3/8-inch side is resting on the work surface, and the 30-inch side butts up to the 30-inch side on the smaller piece. Ensure that the pieces are flush with each other.

    • 3

Fill a hobby syringe with acrylic cement; insert syringe the needle into the bottle, and pull the plunger. Press the tip of the syringe to the corner where the two pieces of acrylic meet. Ensure that their edges are flush, and press the plunger to release a thin line of cement down the length of the acrylic. Hold the two pieces in place for one minute. Place a brick or heavy box on the outside of the larger sheet, and press it in to hold the sheet in place. Leave it to set for 25 minutes.

Turn the acrylic sheets to rest the 48-inch piece flat on the work surface, with the 29-inch piece pointing up. Place a second 29-by-30-by-3/8-inch piece against the 30-inch side of the 48-inch piece opposite the first 29-inch piece; the sheets should appear to create three sides of a rectangle. Align the second 29-inch piece in the same position as the first, and attach it to the 48-inch piece using more acrylic cement. Use a brick or box to hold the cemented piece upright for 25 minutes.

Turn the acrylic sheets so the edges of all three pieces are flat on your work surface. The 3/8-inch sides of the acrylic sheets should be pointing upward. Apply a line of acrylic cement on the upturned 3/8-inch edges of all three pieces. Place a sheet of acrylic measuring 29-by-40-by-3/8 inches on top of the other three sheets. Work quickly, and make sure that all the edges are flush. Leave the structure to sit for 25 minutes before setting the desk upright and using it.
