DIY Children's Desk

Preparing a place for your child to do her homework will make the task easier to complete. She can focus more easily on her homework when she has a proper place to sit without distractions. You can create a desk for your child by recycling old furniture. This will give your child more freedom to work on projects without worrying about ruining the surface of the desk.
  1. Size

    • Make sure to create a space that is appropriate for the height of your child. Using adult-sized furniture is not comfortable for a child. The seat of the chair should fit easily under the desk and the child should be able to sit in the chair with his feet touching the ground. Also make sure the height of the desk is not too tall or short. He should be able to write easily without straining to reach the paper.

    Sawhorse Legs

    • Creating a desk with 2 sawhorses and a piece of plywood is an inexpensive option for a child's desk. The desk can grow with the child by changing the height of the legs as the child grows. Purchase two adjustable metal sawhorses for the legs of the desk. You can make the legs longer or shorter depending on the height of the child. Lay a piece of plywood of the desired size for your desk on top of the sawhorse legs. Remember to secure the desktop to the sawhorse legs with screws. The desktop can be painted any color to match the child's room or it can be stained to match wood furniture you have. The adjustable legs can also be painted with spray paint to match the child's room.

    Wall Desk

    • You can make a small desk for your child with two wood brackets and a piece of plywood. Determine the size of desktop you want based on the size of space the desk will be and what your child will be using the desk for. If you plan to have a computer on the desk, make sure there is enough room for the computer as well as space where your child can read a book and do homework. Screw the wood brackets to the wall with the top of the bracket at the height you want your desk. Make sure you screw your brackets into a wall stud to make the desk secure. Space the brackets apart far enough to support the desktop. Center the plywood desktop over the brackets and screw it in place. The desk can be painted or stained to match the décor of the room.
