What Causes Creaking in a Sofa Seat?

A creaking noise coming from the seat of a sofa can indicate severe damage inside the frame. Understanding what materials and construction methods result in a quality sofa can help you pinpoint the cause of the creaking noise. The better the construction of the furniture, the less likely the sofa seat will begin creaking.
  1. Sofa Frame

    • Most sofas have wooden frames, although some older sofas may feature metal frames. Hardwood frames in well-constructed sofas withstand heavier use and are less prone to cracking or creaking. Weaker softwood frames are more likely to creak, crack or break. A well-constructed hardwood frame won't creak when you push back against the seat or move around. The frame should also have corner reinforcements, which are typically blocks of wood attached at the corners of the frame to prevent cracking. Seats that creak may be lacking reinforcement even if the sofa is constructed of hardwood.

    Springs

    • The inner springs inside the sofa provide support and resiliency so the cushion returns to its shape after each use. Well-made sofas feature tempered steel springs combined with a metal support frame. Weak springs begin creaking after the sofa experiences heavy use. The weakening of the springs eventually causes them to break or bend out of shape, resulting in a sagging or lumpy sofa. The manufacturer's specifications detail the spring and support materials used inside the sofa.

    Convertible Sofas

    • Convertible sofas include both sleeper sofas that convert into beds and recliner couches. These sofa styles are more prone to creaking due to the mechanisms inside the frame. The springs of the bed inside a sleeper sofa may actually be the cause of creaking noises instead of a flaw in the actual construction. Creaking can also occur when screws become loose on recliner mechanisms, which can occur after heavy use. Inspecting the mechanism and tightening loose parts can eliminate or minimize creaking.

    Care Requirements

    • You can minimize creaking and damage to your existing sofa. Avoid jumping or standing on the seat or arms so the wood and springs don't begin to weaken and crack. Rotating the seats most commonly used evens out wear on cushions, springs and frame, extending the usable life of the sofa. Always use the handles or levers for opening and closing recliners and sleeper sofas. Shut the recliner leg before getting in or out of the seat, otherwise the increased weight on the recliner may weaken the mechanism.
