How to Keep a Sofa from Sliding

When a sofa is on carpet, it usually stays in place fairly well. When a sofa is on a hard floor such as tile, wood or linoleum, however, keeping it from sliding out of place is often difficult. That is because most sofa legs are made of wood or plastic, which are unable to grip the smooth surface of tile, wood or linoleum adequately. Fortunately, a variety of remedies are available to prevent a sofa from sliding. They also help to prevent the sofa from scratching the floor.

Things You'll Need

  • Area rug (optional)
  • Rug pad (optional)
  • Rubber pads or grippers (optional)
  • Rubber shelf liner (optional)
  • Measuring tape (optional)
  • Scissors (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Place an area rug underneath the sofa. The rug will prevent contact between the floor and the sofa, stopping the furniture from sliding. If the type of rug you use begins to slide, place a rug pad beneath it.

    • 2

Put store-bought rubber pads, or grippers, under each leg of the sofa. The pads grip the legs and floor in a way that does not allow the sofa to move. Rubber pads or grippers vary in style. Some of the products simply sit underneath the sofa legs while others screw into the legs.

    • 3

Make furniture grippers by cutting rubber shelf liner into pieces that are the size of the sofa's legs. Then place the cut rubber shelf liner underneath the legs. Rubber shelf liner has the same effect as store-bought rubber pads or grippers, preventing the sofa from sliding on the floor.
