How to Make a Chair Made Out of Feathers

Feathered chairs, tables and lamps are exotic furniture pieces that grace showrooms more often than everyday homes. These pieces evoke Hollywood glamor and pair well with mirrored furniture or other unusually shaped or finished items. Making a feathered chair requires a lot of feathers and careful feather placement. Once you finish constructing the chair, it will immediately become a conversation piece.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the chair with the back facing you. Tip the chair forward so that the back is level with the floor and stable. The seat back can rest on another chair or bench. Use a chair with a recessed back surrounded by wood or metal. More ornate or ultra modern chairs will take to the treatment with the best results.

    • 2

Draw horizontal lines across the insert area of the chair back, 1 inch apart. Mark the fabric or wood with a pencil.

    • 3

Measure the width of the bottommost line and deduct 1/4 inch. Cut feather trim to this length.

    • 4

Apply a bead of hot glue along the bottommost line and press the fabric band of the feather trim into the glue. All of the feathers should be the same direction and facing down. Measure and cut your next row. Apply your glue and press the trim into place. Apply feathers to the entire seat back until you reach the top wood.

    • 5

Cut a piece of decorative trim the same color as the feathers. Apply hot glue over the top fabric area of your last row of feathers. Press your decorative trim in place to hide the top of the feathers.
