How to Put a Twin Bed Over a Full Bunk Bed With Build-A-Bear Furniture

Build-A-Bear is known for its chain of self-assembled toy outlets, but it has also entered the children's furniture market with bedroom furniture. Build-A-Bear bed frames are built to last and can be reorganized into bunk beds to change up the room and add space. Build-A-Bear makes twin and full bed sets that are designed to connect together, but it also offers separate twin and full beds that will need to be modified into bunk beds.

Instructions

  1. Pre-Manufactured Bunk Beds

    • 1

Set the included installation pegs in the holes at the top of each of the full bed's bedposts.

    • 2

Lift the twin bed, with the help of an assistant, onto the vertical pegs on the full bed's bedposts.

    • 3

Adjust the positioning until the holes in the bottom of the twin bedposts line up perfectly with the pegs and the posts are flush together.

    Separate Twin and Full Beds

    • 4

Measure the height of the headboard and the footboard on the bottom bunk and find the difference to figure out how much the footboard must be raised.

    • 5

Cut out four 2-by-4 boards that are this length plus 12 inches. Measure the distance between the center of the twin bed posts. Transfer this distance to the full bed and mark it there so that one mark is near the rear of the bed and the other is two-thirds of the way along the footboard.

    • 6

Position the cut 2-by-4s on either side of the footboard vertically at both of the marked spots. Space the 2-by-4s with their large faces against the footboard so that 12 inches remain on the footboard and the rest extends upward. Drill holes through both boards and the footboard from the inside but avoid breaking through the outer surface of the exterior 2-by-4. Make six holes in this manner then attach the boards together with 4-inch wood screws.

    • 7

Mount another 2-by-4 board between the two vertical boards or use another size of board, depending on how big the gap is. Mark the top of the vertical boards on this board and cut it off with a saw at the marking. Attach this board to the vertical boards in the same manner that the vertical boards were installed on the footboard. Repeat with both boards to create the footboard posts.

    • 8

Drill a 1/4-inch hole into the center of the two footposts and into the corresponding areas of the headboard to create posts for the headboard as well if necessary. Drill a 1/4-inch hole up into the center of the base of each of the twin bedposts. Make all of these holes 2-inches deep.

    • 9

Set a 1/4-inch-diameter, 4-inch pegs into the top of these holes on the bottom bed. Raise the twin bed and lower it forcefully onto the pegs.
