Assembly Instructions for a Reese Platform Bed

Platform beds are the most basic form of constructed bed. They consist of a raised rectangular base that holds a slat roll, supported by crosspieces, to support the mattress. There are several types of platform beds, such as contemporary, transitional and Reese-style, a platform bed that requires no box springs. Reese-style platform beds are perhaps the easiest to assemble, as the assemblage requires tapping the frame components securely in place with a rubber mallet and securing them with the hardware included in the bed kit.

Instructions

  1. Reese

    • 1

Position the Reese platform bed base at the location you'll build it. Leave 2 feet of space between the base and any walls to allow access during assembly.

    • 2

Position the platform on the base with the large platform holes facing up. Line up the large platform holes with the holes in the bed base.

    • 3

Insert the supplied 2-1/2-inch bolts in the platform holes. Thread a washer on one of the bolts where it comes through the base. Secure a nut on the bolt, but don't tighten it completely. Repeat with the remaining 2-1/2-inch bolts. Twin- and full-size Reese platform beds use four bolts; queen- and king-size beds use eight bolts.

    • 4

Ensure the platform is aligned precisely with the bed base. Secure the nuts in place with a 1-1/16-inch wrench. Tighten each of the bolts with a flathead screwdriver.

    Platform Bed II

    • 5

Position the two long headboard legs on the work surface with the slots for the crosspieces facing up.

    • 6

Insert a crosspiece in the top slot on the headboard leg, lining up the two posts extending from the slot where you'll place the crosspiece with the matching holes in the crosspiece. Tap the crosspiece in place with a rubber mallet. Place the crosspiece with the two pre-drilled 5/8-inch holes on the bottom, with the holes facing the foot of the bed. The holes will secure the center support rail to the footboard. Repeat with the other two crosspieces. Use a spirit level to ensure each crosspiece is inserted evenly.

    • 7

Screw the four 5/8-inch screws in the predrilled holes in the headboard and footboard. Insert the two outer rails in their notches in the headboard and footboard. Tap them in snugly using a rubber mallet.

    • 8

Secure the center support rail to the headboard and footboard with the four 5/8-inch shoulder screws. Tap all connected joints of the bed in place securely with the rubber mallet.

    • 9

Insert the four 5/16-inch by 1-inch wood pins in the holes of the side rails. The four pins will support the slat roll. A slat roll comprises a series of 1-inch-wide boards tethered together with straps that, when unrolled and placed on the bed frame, serve as the support for the mattress in lieu of box springs.

    • 10

Position the slat roll strap-side up to allow the end slats to overlap the pins. Secure the center slat to the side rails with two 1/4-inch screws.
