Use a measuring tape to measure the width of your bed. This will be the width of your headboard. Use the wall behind your bed to measure the height of the headboard. Start from the floor and measure upward against the wall to get this measurement. When deciding on the height, keep in mind that lights will be installed on the headboard and that the lights should be at least a foot away from your head when you sit up in bed and read.
Use the width and height measurements to draw your headboard on the plywood sheet with a pencil. Use a ruler to make the lines straight.
Cut the large headboard out with a jigsaw. Use sandpaper to smooth the edges of the plywood cuts. This will remove any splinters and cracks.
Paint the headboard with your chosen paint or stain and a paintbrush. For a lighter appearance, apply one or two coats. If you want a bold or solid look, apply three or more coats. Each coat should dry completely before you apply the next coat. When you're done, allow the headboard to dry overnight before continuing to Step 5.
Attach the headboard to the box mattress frame of the bed with screws and a drill. Use a level to make sure the headboard is even.
Attach the clip-on lights to the headboard. They can be attached to the top or sides of the headboard, depending on your personal preference. When you're attaching the lights, make sure that the cords and wiring from the lamps fall behind the headboard, so they are hidden. Plug the cords into an outlet, push the bed and headboard up against the wall and turn on the lights.
