How to Build a Platform Bed Headboard

Platform beds use a platform-style surface to support the mattress. The mattress is already supported, so there is no need for any type of additional mattress foundation, including bed springs. Since the mattress is placed directly onto the platform, there is usually no attached headboard, which offers you endless design possibilities in creating your own headboard. A simple fabric-covered headboard is easy to make and requires just a few materials from your local craft and home improvement stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the platform width. You will want to make your headboard slightly wider than the platform bed frame, so add 2 to 3 inches extra on each side. Determine how tall you want your headboard to be.

    • 2

Purchase a plywood plank with your specific measurements. You will also need to purchase foam batting and fabric of your choice at the fabric store. Be sure to get larger foam and fabric pieces than your measurements to accommodate folding over the plywood.

    • 3

Lay out the foam batting on the floor, and then lay the cut piece of plywood directly on top of it. Apply a beading of glue around the outside perimeter of the plywood, approximately ½-inch thick. Fold over the excess foam around all edges, and press firmly into the glue. The glue will secure the foam to the wood and will later be stapled.

Lay out your fabric wrong-side up on the floor, and then place the foam-covered board directly on top, foam side down. Fold the excess fabric over the board and staple in place. Pull fabric taut, but don’t pull too tight to avoid making the material look stretched. Make sure the corners are folded and then staple into place.

Attach the wall brackets to both the wall and the upper corners of the headboard. Secure the headboard to the wall.
