Limestone, a sedimentary rock consisting of calcium carbonate and other minerals, is formed by fossils that are millions of years old. It is primarily light in color and has been used as a building material for thousands of years. Age, stress, dirt and settling can cause limestone walls in a home to chip and crack. Most chips can be ignored, as they do not threaten the structural integrity of the walls. However, cracks, especially in a basement that forms the foundation of a building, should be repaired.
