How to Comply With The Phase-out Of HCFC Refrigerant Gases

Hydrochloroflourocarbons, more commonly referred to as HCFCs, are commonly used as refrigerant in air conditioning systems around the world. HCFCs damage the ozone layer, and the Environmental Protection Agency has mandated that HCFCs be phased out by 2020. Complying with the mandate in the meantime is a fairly simple process. The best thing you can do is maintain your equipment.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact a licensed service technician and explain that you would like to comply with the phase-out of the HCFC coolant R-22. The Better Business Bureau is an excellent resource for consumers who want to work with reliable contractors.

    • 2

Verify with the technician that he is certified under EPA Section 608. Section 608 states that technicians must be trained to maintain equipment that uses R-22. If he is certified, make an appointment.

    • 3

Ask the technician to perform maintenance and recommend upgrades that will satisfy the EPA phase out of R-22. You may be able to modify your existing equipment to use non-ozone-depleting coolant, or you may choose to replace your equipment altogether.

    • 4

Maintain your equipment regularly until the phase-out is required in 2020. The EPA says that maintaining cooling equipment is "the most important thing you can do."
