How to Replace Standard Interior Lighting With Low Voltage

Everyone likes saving money on a power bill. One simple way to do this is by replacing your standard interior lighting with low-voltage lighting through the use low-voltage can lights. If you do not currently have recessed lights in your home, you need to prepare the home’s joists to support can lights. If you are unsure how to properly reinforce your home’s joists, consult with a carpenter for guidance and assistance.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power to the wires you’ll be working with. Confirm that the power is off by checking the wires with a voltage sensor.

    • 2

Hang the can light onto the joist reinforcement beam, and screw the light into position.

    • 3

Connect a low-voltage transformer to the 110-volt current wires with wire mashers. The transformer will regulate and reduce the amount of power going to the light, making it safe for the light. You need to press the mashers firmly onto the wires for proper conductivity.

    • 4

Connect the can light’s wires to the transformer wires. Close the connection with electrical tape.

    • 5

Place the can light’s cap into position, and turn the power back on to check the light.
