How to Cut 30-Degree Crown Molding

Crown molding is typically found along the tops of walls under ceilings. The most common locations for it are kitchens and dining rooms of homes. Instructions

Measure and record the length of the first wall to the end where the 30-degree cut will need to be made. Run a tape measure along the first piece of crown and mark on the spot at the length of the first recorded measurement. This will be the length of the first wall and where the first cut is going to be made. Make a straight line across the entire piece to ensure a straight cut will be made.

Set up the compound miter saw on a table. Check to make sure everything is stable and on steady ground. Inspect the blade to make sure it is properly secure.

    • 3

Turn the saw to 30 degrees in either direction and lock it into place. Flip the crown molding upside down and slide it into the saw along the fence. Tilt the bottom of the molding up against the fence of the saw allowing the top to sit on the base.

Line up the blade of the saw to the mark on the molding where the cut is going to be made. Plug in the saw and pull down on the lever through the piece of molding to make a smooth complete cut. Turn the saw to 30 degrees in the other direction and repeat the same process to make the cut for the opposite side of the crown, making sure to measure first.

Measure the rest of the pieces that need to be cut to 30 degrees and follow the previous steps until all the cuts have been made.
