How to Cut Crown Molding on a 22.5-Degree Angle

Cutting crown molding has long been one of the trickiest parts of installing any type of molding. Crown is used along the tops of walls just under the ceilings in kitchens and dining rooms of houses. No matter the size or width of crown molding, cutting it is the hardest part of the installation process. The key to a perfect cut of crown molding is lining it up properly in the miter saw and turning the blade to the proper angle. In just a few short steps, this can be accomplished and installation can begin.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the first wall to determine when the 22.5-degree cut is going to need to be made and then measure that distance on the piece of crown. Mark it with a marker and line up a T-square at the mark. Draw a straight line along the T-square across the molding precisely at the mark so an exact cut can be made.

    • 2

Turn the piece of crown molding upside down and slide it into the miter saw along the fence so the bottom of the crown piece is leaning up against the top of the fence and the top is resting along the base of the saw.

    • 3

Turn the angle of the miter saw to 22.5 degrees to either the left or the right. Slide the piece further in and line up the blade of the saw to the mark on the crown.

    • 4

Plug in the saw and hold the crown firmly in place so it does not move when the cut is made. Pull down on the lever to engage the saw and come through the crown until the cut has been made. Release the lever to stop the blade from spinning and allow it to rise back up into place.

    • 5

Measure the crown to make sure the proper length cut was made and repeat the process for the next piece, making sure to turn the blade of the saw to the opposite side. Position the two pieces together on the wall to check and see that they fit together properly around the corner and make sure the correct cut was made.
