# How to Fix a Carpet Gripper
Carpet grippers are strips laid around the edges of a room on which you attach carpet. The gripper usually has small teeth to hold the carpet rather than large tacks like traditional carpet tack strips. Carpet grippers can break or receive damage during installation or at some point during their lifetime. You can replace the carpet grippers with a little bit of work; this helps ensure proper carpet installation and also ensures that carpet will not become too loose or overstretch over time.

- Pry bar
- Tape measure
- Saw
- Hammer
- Nails
- Carpet gripper

Preinstallation of Carpet

Pry up the broken carpet gripper with a pry bar. Place the pry bar at each nail into the subfloor and pull up on the gripper.

Measure and cut a new carpet gripper using a tape measure and saw.

Install the new carpet gripper by hammering nails into the subfloor at the specified intervals.
Existing Carpet

Pull back the carpet carefully where you think the carpet gripper has a problem. When you find it, loosen the entire carpet edge along the wall.

Measure and cut a new carpet gripper using a tape measure and saw.

Install the new carpet gripper by hammering nails into the subfloor at the specified intervals.

Replace the carpet over the new gripper. Use a knee kicker to stretch and attach the carpet onto the new gripper.
