How to Build a Bulkhead Over Cabinets

1. Mark the Location

Use a level to mark the position of the studs on the wall. Snap chalk lines around the room at these marks. This will indicate the top of the cabinets. Leave a 1/2-inch to 1-inch gap between the top of the cabinets and the chalk line.

2. Install Blocking Between Studs

Cut wooden blocking to fit between the studs from the floor to the marked chalk lines. Place blocking every 16 inches on center. Fasten the blocking to the studs using 2-inch wood screws.

3. Construct the Bulkhead

A: Cut 1x4 pine to fit between the walls between the blocking in the corners.

B: Starting in the corner, attach 1-inch x 4-inch pine lumber around the perimeter of the room, attaching the lumber to the blocking with 1 5/8-inch brad nails. Build the bulkhead out 2 to 3 feet past the cabinets.

C: Cut a 1-inch x 6-inch pine board 1-inch shorter than the width of the bulkhead at the front. Center this board on the front and nail in place.

D: Cut a 1-inch x 4-inch board to the same length and width as the bulkhead at the back. Attach this board on top of the other bulkhead pieces.

4. Trim the Bulkhead

A: Cut 1x4 quarter round to fit along the inside corners around the bulkhead.

B: Cut and install decorative molding around the edges of the bulkhead.

C: Attach crown molding to the bottom edge of the bulkhead, just below the crown molding on the room's ceiling.

5. Install Lighting Fixtures

A: Decide where you want to place lighting.

B: Cut holes in the bulkhead as needed for the lighting. If you're working with electrical lights, you may want to have a professional electrician install the fixtures for safety reasons.

C: Attach the lighting fixtures to the bulkhead as desired.

6. Finishing Touches

A: Paint the bulkhead white to match the other trim in your room.

B: Add decorative items to the bulkhead, such as rope lighting or fabric trim.

C: Replace the doorknobs and cabinet hardware with new, decorative hardware.
