Facts on Nelpetite Mango Trees

Nelpetite mango trees are members of the Anacariaceae family, which surprisingly includes many plants that are highly poisonous. The mango is native to southern Asia and was first introduced to south Florida in 1833, according to Purdue University. Mango trees can live to be very old, with some still bearing fruit after 300 years.
  1. Background

    • The Nelpetite mango is a cultivar created in South Africa from many years of meticulous government breeding in Nelspruit. The Nelpetite is a small mango, usually weighing about 6.5 ounces. It has a delicate pine-nut and apricot flavor. The tree is small, but is a heavy producer. Its small size makes it a good choice for a home garden.

    Growth Habitat

    • Mango trees will grow in any well-drained soil that is not wet and heavy. Clay, sandy and loam support tree growth. They produce extensive roots and need deep soil to accommodate the roots, which are not destructive. If planted in the desert, the mango needs shade from other trees, or should be planted on the north side of the house. Near coastal areas, it should be planted against a south wall or near paving, to maximize heat. If kept in a greenhouse, full light and maximum air circulation are required to avoid disease.

    Pests and Diseases

    • Nelpetite mangoes that are grown in a greenhouse are at risk for thrip, which causes the leave to turn brown. Mites, scale and mealybugs are frequent pests both outdoors and in a greenhouse. Sulfur kills mites, while malathion is the typical treatment for insects. The trees' roots are highly sensitive to root loss caused by gophers, transplanting or digging.

    Nutrition

    • Besides the wonderful taste, mangos are a nutrition powerhouse. A 1-cup serving provides 35 percent of your daily vitamin A, 12 percent of your daily fiber, 10 percent of your daily vitamin C and only 100 calories, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Mangos have no cholesterol or sodium, and less than 1 gram of fat, so they are diet-friendly while providing many nutrients and antioxidants.
