How to Plant a Patio Garden

Patio gardens add a splash of color to your outdoor living space. Almost any plant that grows in the ground grows in a container, as long as you have the right climate for it. You can even grow tropical plants in the summer and move them indoors in the winter if you live in a colder climate. Patio gardens also require less work since you don't have to do any landscaping.

Instructions

Select containers for your plants. Plastic requires less frequent watering than wooden and ceramic containers. Any container you choose should have four to eight drainage holes in the bottom. Make sure the containers are large enough for the plants you want to grow. Annual flowers only need small plants about 5 to 8 inches tall, while vegetables need 1- to 2-gallon pots.

Select plants for your container garden. Annual flowers such as petunias, snapdragons and lobelia grow well in containers. Any herbs -- mint, basil and rosemary -- grow in containers and vegetables such as cherry tomatoes, bell peppers and lettuce grow in containers, too.

Fill containers 1/2 to two-thirds full of potting soil. Create holes for the plants. Place the plants in the hole. Make sure the top of the plant is about 1 to 2 inches below the top of the container. Fill the pot full of soil about 1 to 2 inches below the top of the container so the soil is even with the top of the plant's rootball.

Water the plant well until water drips out of the bottom of the container.
