How to Make a Hydroponic Water Storage

A water storage container in a hydroponic system is normally used to store the nutrient solution that feeds the plants in between feedings. The size of the container will vary depending on the overall size of the hydroponic system. Many systems require water storage for both before and after the growing pots have been flooded. Storage tanks can be made out of almost anything that will hold water, as long as it is not toxic.

Things You'll Need

  • Hydroponic growing pots
  • Support medium
  • Measuring cup
  • Plastic tank, tub or large bucket, food-grade
  • Drill with keyhole cutting bit
  • Faucet with washer or O-ring
  • Short hose

Instructions

    • 1

Calculate how large of a storage tank you need for your system. Fill the plant pots or trays with the support medium you intend to use, such as perlite, gravel or rock wool.

    • 2

Measure how much water it takes to fill the pot to within an inch of the top of the growth medium. Multiply this number by the number of pots you will be using in the system. This is the minimum size of your water storage tank.

    • 3

Purchase a food-grade plastic tank that will hold at least the amount of liquid you will need for your system. It can be bigger, but not smaller.

    • 4

Determine the size faucet you will need. The entire tank should be able to drain fairly quickly, in about 10 minutes. How long your tank will take depends on several things, such as how large the tank is, how large the faucet you use is, and how high above your hydroponic pots you set the tank.

    • 5

Select a ½-inch faucet for smaller tanks and 3/4-inch faucets for larger tanks. For very large tanks, you should choose a faucet that is 1 inch or larger.

    • 6

Drill a hole in one end of the tank, down low but not in the bottom of the tank. Make the hole the right size to receive the faucet you have chosen. Remove any rough edges from around the hole.

    • 7

Install the faucet, using an O-ring or washer to ensure it doesn't leak. Attach the hose to the faucet to direct water into the hydroponic pots when you want to feed the plants. The tank is ready to use.
