How to Substitute Fresh Tomatoes for Canned

Canned tomatoes are a convenient and affordable way to add flavor and nutrients to your cooking. However, if you don't have any canned tomatoes on hand, you can easily substitute fresh tomatoes. Here's how:

Ingredients:

* 3-4 large ripe tomatoes

* 1/4 cup olive oil

* 1/2 tsp salt

* 1/4 tsp black pepper

* 1/4 tsp garlic powder

* 1/4 tsp onion powder

Instructions:

1. Core and chop the tomatoes. Cut a small X in the bottom of each tomato and place them in a bowl of boiling water for 30 seconds. This will help to loosen the skin. Remove the tomatoes from the water and let them cool slightly. Once they are cool enough to handle, peel and chop them into 1-inch pieces.

2. Heat the oil in a large skillet. Over medium heat, add the olive oil to the skillet. Once the oil is shimmering, add the tomatoes, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.

3. Cook the tomatoes. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. The tomatoes should be soft and juicy.

4. Use as needed. The fresh tomato sauce can be used as a substitute for canned tomatoes in any recipe.

Notes:

* If you don't have ripe tomatoes, you can use green tomatoes. However, green tomatoes have a more tart flavor, so you may want to add a little sugar to the sauce.

* You can add other herbs, spices, or seasonings to the sauce to your taste. For example, you could add basil, oregano, thyme, rosemary, or red pepper flakes.

* The fresh tomato sauce will keep in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
