How Tall Do Sweet 100 Tomato Plants Grow?

Sweet 100 and the Super Sweet 100 hybrid are indeterminate varieties of cherry tomatoes. The characteristics of the vine make it potentially a very tall or, at least, a wide-spreading plant depending on the type of pruning you do, proper fertilization, watering, spacing and positioning. Like all tomatoes, Sweet 100s need tomato-specific fertilizers. Too much nitrogen or not enough potassium, calcium and phosphorus can stunt the growth of the vines and the fruit.

  1. Description

    • A small, sweet cherry-sized tomato, Sweet 100s produce 1 oz. tomatoes, generally used in salads. The fruit grows in long, pendulous clusters and produce fruit right up till the first frost of winter. Delicious for snacking, Sweet 100s can be cooked, canned or even dried. They actually get sweeter when you dry them. The original Sweet 100 variety is not longer sold commercially and has been replaced by the Super Sweet 100.

    Indeterminate Vine

    • As an indeterminate variety of tomato plant, the flowers grow on the sides of Sweet 100 vines instead of on the terminal ends of the stems. What this means is that the vines continue to grow and produce fruit throughout the growing season.

    Care

    • Fertilize your plants with an 8-32-16 or 6-24-24 tomato-specific fertilizer following manufacturer's instructions -- the numbers indicate the percentage of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, respectively. Water deeply twice or three times a week. Plant where the plants receive full-sun at least six hours a day in well-drained soil. Space the plants 2 to 3 feet apart in rows four feet apart for plenty of air circulation. Stake the vines or tie them to a trellis for support. This results in healthy, fast-growing vines from 7 to 10 feet tall.

    Height

    • Trim the vines from each plant to just one or two vines and remove any suckers that appear. When pruned in this manner, the roots put all their energy into the one or two vines and give you a steady healthy crop of tomatoes on a 9 or 10-foot vine.
