Identification of Tropical House Plants

Tropical house plants are a simple way to compliment any home's interior design. Some common tropical house plants are birds of paradise, orchids and bromeliads. While these plants are easy to maintain indoors, they all require plenty of sunlight, warm temperatures and adequate water. Identifying a tropical house plant can be rather difficult due to the fact that some plant types have thousands of species. To further help to identify tropical house plants, resources are available on the internet and in books.

Examine the presence of lack of flowers. If flowers are present, take note of the color/colors, amount of petals, shape of petals and size of the flower. Flowering tropical plants are able to maintain their blooms year round due to the environment provided by home temperatures. Bromeliads, bird of paradise and orchids are all common flowering tropical house plants.

Look at the leaves of the plant. Take note of the shape of the leaves, veining in the leaves, shade of green, texture and thickness. Some leaves may be broad to absorb sunlight, and some may have a waxy coating to slick off excess water. Croton plants are common household tropicals that have these characteristics.
