How to Divide and Transplant Bearded Irises

Bearded irises are easy to divide and transplant, and division can be done anytime during the growing season. However, the best time to divide bearded irises is in late summer or early fall, after the foliage has died back but the rootstock is still firm and healthy.

To divide and transplant bearded irises, follow these steps:

1. Dig up the entire iris clump carefully. Use a sharp spade or shovel to dig around the entire clump, being careful not to damage the rootstock.

2. Separate the iris rhizomes. Use your hands to gently separate the rhizomes from each other. Be careful not to break the rhizomes.

3. Remove any damaged or diseased rhizomes. Discard any rhizomes that are soft, mushy, or have any other signs of damage or disease.

4. Trim the rhizomes. Trim the rhizomes to about 4-6 inches long.

5. Replant the iris rhizomes. Dig holes about 1-2 inches deep and 12 inches apart. Set the rhizomes in the holes, spreading the roots out evenly. Cover the rhizomes with soil and water well.

6. Keep the irises well-watered. Keep the irises watered regularly, especially during dry spells.

7. Fertilize the irises in spring. Fertilize the irises with a balanced fertilizer, such as 10-10-10, in early spring.

8. Enjoy your new irises! The irises will bloom the following spring.

Here are a few tips for dividing and transplanting bearded irises:

* Use a sharp knife or spade to divide the rhizomes. A dull blade can damage the rhizomes.

* Be careful not to break the rhizomes. Broken rhizomes may not survive.

* Replant the rhizomes as soon as possible after dividing them. The sooner they are replanted, the sooner they will start to grow new roots.

* Keep the irises well-watered during the growing season, especially if the weather is dry.

* Fertilize the irises with a balanced fertilizer, such as 10-10-10, in early spring.

* Enjoy your new irises! The irises will bloom the following spring.
