Barnyard Grass Herbicides

Barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli) is an annual summer weed that grows up to 5 feet tall. The weed has thick stems and is without ligules. Barnyardgrass is a common weed of turf, landscapes and number of crops all across the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The weed has a fibrous root system and frequently inhabits wet turf areas and moist and disturbed sites such as marshes. A number of herbicides provide adequate control of barnyardgrass.
  1. Benefin

    • Benefin is cited by the Colorado State University Extension site as among the herbicides that provide a good to excellent level control of barnyardgrass. Besides barnyardgrass, the herbicide controls the growth of a number of other annual grasses and broadleaf weeds. Benefin is a pre-emergent herbicide available under different trade names and is added to the soil before the land is cultivated. The herbicide does not control the already-established weeds. For best results, incorporate herbicides deeper than 2 inches, otherwise the herbicide will not be entirely effective. Benefin works by killing the weed seeds as they continue to germinate.

    Bensulide

    • Bensulide is listed by the Colorado State University Extension site as among the good herbicides for barnyardgrass, providing a good to excellent level of control. The herbicide a pre-emergent and best applied in cultivated areas before the weed seeds start to germinate. After applying to the soil, water the area well. The herbicide, sold under different trade names, is an effective long-term residual control of barnyardgrass and a number of other broadleaved weeds, including redroot pigweed, lambsquarters, watergrass and goosegrass.

    Pendemethalin

    • Pendemathalin herbicides offer a good to excellent range of control on barnyardgrass, according to the Colorado State University Extension. Pendemethalin is among the selective herbicides that control a number of annual grasses and broadleaf weeds in crops such as cotton, peanuts, rice and potatoes. Pendemethalin is a dual-purpose herbicide that works effectively as a pre-emergent applied before the weed seeds start to sprout or during the early post-emergent phase of weed growth. The herbicide is available as a wettable powder, emulsifiable concentrate or in granular form. Pendimethalin is sold under different trade names.
