Perennials With Red & Yellow Flowers

Perennial flowers are non-woody plants that grow for many years. These plants die back to the ground when exposed to freezing temperatures only to grow again from the surviving roots each spring. One of the biggest benefits to perennial flowers is that they do not need to be planted again each year like annuals. Red and yellow perennial flowers bring splashes of color to a flowerbed and look great in front of tall bushes. When placing the perennial flowers in the bed, plant the shorter flowers in front of taller ones.

  1. Yellow Spring Perennials

    • Spring perennial flowers provide color from May through June. Basket of Gold (Aurinia saxatilis) is also called golden tuft. This perennial grows to 12 inches tall and produces showy flowers in rock gardens and flower borders. Golden columbine (Aquilegia chrysantha) grows well in full to partial shade, creating a 30-inch tall flowering plant suitable to wildflower gardens. Leopard's bane (Doronicum orientale) blooms in the early spring with daisy-like flowers on 12-inch-tall plants, in full to partial sun. Woolly yarrow (Achillea tomentosa) grows about 12 inches tall in full sun. This yellow flower grows well in an arid, rocky garden.

    Yellow Summer Perennials

    • Summer blossoms begin to appear near the end of June and stretch throughout August. Fernleaf yarrow (Achillea filipendulina) grows well in full sun locations to a height of 48 inches. The fern-like, grayish-green leaves give the flowerbed an unusual color. Golden marguerite (Anthemis tinctoria) grows 36 inches tall in arid, sandy soil and full sun exposure. Lance-leaf coreopsis (Coreopsis lanceolata) grows to 30 inches and produces flowers great for cutting. Oxeye sunflower (Heliopsis helianthoides) works well in small group plantings and grows to 42 inches tall in full sunlight.

    Red Spring Perennials

    • Look for these red flowers from April until at least the end of June. Avens (Geum spp.) produces single or double flowers on a 30-inch-tall perennial. This flower grows well in rock gardens or flower borders. Common bleedingheart (Dicentra spectabilis) is a moisture-loving flower needing full shade. The 30-inch-tall stem is covered with heart-shaped blossoms. Coralbells (Heuchera sanguinea) reaches 18 inches in height with dainty flowers suitable for cut flowers. Wild columbine (Aquilegia canadensis) grow to 24 inches tall in full to partial shade areas. This is a good perennial to grow in a wildflower garden.

    Red Summer Perennials

    • The summer perennial blooming season stretches from July into August. Astilbe (Astilbe x Arendsii) grows 30 inches tall in moist soil with partial shade exposure; cultivars offer several shades of red. Cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis) reaches 48 inches in height in good-draining soil that still stays moist with afternoon shade. Cranesbill (Geranium sanguineum) produces small leaves on 12-inch stems. The leaves turn blood-red when touched by frost, with seedpods that look like bird beaks. The Achillea millefolium known as 'Crimson Beauty' is a drought tolerant perennial preferring full sunlight. The pinkish-red blossoms grow on a 12-inch stem and are used as a cut flower.
