How to Grow Agastache Blue Fortune

Agastache "Blue Fortune," also known as Blue Fortune hyssop or giant hyssop, is a clump-forming perennial that grows up to 3 feet tall. It has vibrant green, rough-edged foliage and produces 4-inch purple-blue flower clusters from mid-summer until the first killing frost. Agastache Blue Fortune grows quickly in full sun or partial shade and well-drained soil. It draws a bounty of butterflies and other pollinating insects to the garden and is winter hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture zones 5 through 9.

Things You'll Need

  • Garden fork
  • Well-rotted manure
  • Balanced organic fertilizer
  • Organic mulch
  • Pruning shears

Instructions

    • 1

Cultivate the soil with a garden fork until it is loose 8 to 10 inches deep. Mix in 3 to 4 inches of well-rotted manure and a 2-inch layer of balanced organic fertilizer.

    • 2

Plant agastache Blue Fortune with its roots at their original depth and water until the soil feels moderately moist. Allow a space of at least 6 inches between the plants.

    • 3

Apply 2 to 3 inches of organic mulch underneath the plants. Avoid heaping the mulch against the stems.

    • 4

Water when the top inch of soil feels completely dry.

    • 5

Trim agastache Blue Fortune after its blooms fade, leaving only the lowest set of leaves in place. This pruning promotes fuller foliage and more abundant blooms during the next growing season.
