How to Grow Mushrooms With Mason Jars

Supplies:

* 1 quart Mason jar

* Substrate: a mixture of organic matter such as straw, sawdust, or coffee grounds.

* Mushroom spores

* Plastic bag with holes

* Spray bottle

* Rubber band

Instructions:

1. Prepare the substrate. Straw or sawdust should be soaked in water for several hours or overnight. If you are using coffee grounds, they can be used without soaking.

2. Add substrate to the jar. Fill the jar about ⅔ full with substrate.

3. Add the mushroom spores. Sprinkle a thin layer of mushroom spores over the moist substrate.

4. Cover the jar with a piece of cloth or paper towel. This will help to keep the moisture in the jar.

5. Place the jar in a warm, dark place. Mushrooms thrive in temperatures between 70 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit, so a kitchen or closet is usually a good place to put the jar.

6. Keep the substrate moist. Mist the substrate with water every day or so. Do not overwater, as this can cause the substrate to become soggy and lead to mold growth.

7. Wait for the mushrooms to grow. It will take several weeks for the mushrooms to grow. Once the mushrooms are mature, they will have a white or brown cap and a long stem.

8. Harvest the mushrooms. When the mushrooms are ready, gently twist them out of the substrate and place them in a container.

9. Enjoy your mushrooms! Mushrooms can be eaten fresh, cooked, or dried for later use.

Tips:

- If you are using a plastic bag, be sure to poke several holes in the bag to allow for air circulation.

- If the substrate becomes contaminated with mold, throw it away and start over.

- For best results, use a sterile substrate and work in a clean environment.
