Post-Emergent Weed Control for Pumpkins

Pumpkin belongs to the cucurbit family and grows on sprawling vines. The vegetable thrives in warm weather and is ready for harvest early to midfall. Weed control is an important management practice in pumpkin. A number of post-emergent herbicides are recommended for weed control.

  1. Types

    • The Michigan State University Extension recommends the use of clethodim, sethoxydim and glyphosate as post-emergent herbicidal control of weeds in pumpkins. All chemicals are sold under different trade names.

    Function

    • Both clethodim and sethoxydim control annual and perennial grasses in a number of broad-leaved crops, including pumpkins. The selective herbicides come as emulsifiable concentrates. Sethoxydim also has indoor uses. Glyphosate controls a number of perennial and annual plants including grasses and woody plants. The herbicide is nonselective and broad spectrum.

    Method of Use

    • Apply clethodim and sethoxydim to actively growing grasses in pumpkin fields. Use glyphosate for effective control of perennial weeds prior to planting and wait for three days before starting to plant.
