Weed Control for Broccoli

Broccoli is a cool season vegetable from the cabbage family. The vegetable is harvested in spring and fall and is rich in vitamin A and D. Weed control is important in the early stages of growing, as weeds greatly affect growth uniformity and vigor of plants. Different types of weed control options benefit broccoli.

  1. Cultural Practices

    • A number of cultural practices and pre-planting strategies help to control weeds in broccoli through the entire growing season. These include planting in high density, crop rotation, mulching and cover cropping.

    Preplanting/Preemergent Herbicides

    • Preplanting and preemergent herbicides retard the germination of weed seeds and keep them from emerging. Preplanting herbicides for broccoli include carfentrazone. Metolachlor is a preemergent herbicide and bensulide is both a preplant and preemergent herbicide recommended for broccoli.

    Postemergent Herbicides

    • Postemergent weed control solutions target already growing weeds and many are available for use with broccoli. These include paraquat, sethoxydim and glyphosate, all sold under a variety of different tradenames.
