Corn gluten meal is obtained from the wet milling of corn. The product is rich in protein, with 55 percent to 65 percent corn protein. Corn gluten meal is used as an additive for supplementary protein in animal feeds and is also a rich source of sulfur amino acids. Used on lawns, the product supplies nitrogen while controlling weeds.

When used as an organic herbicide, corn gluten meal works for the preemergence control of annual weeds, such as crabgrass. Regular use of the product reduces 50 percent to 60 percent of crabgrass growth within the first year and 98 percent by the second year, according to Mellor. Four years of regular use eradicates dandelions from lawns.
