Ecological Weed Control on Driveways

Driveways do not often have problems with weeds. Vehicles that drive over the plants crush them and the soil can become compacted so that roots are not able to develop. But the cracks of paved driveways and the space between ruts of unpaved driveways can sometimes shelter weeds. It can be tempting to grab a bottle of herbicide from a hardware store and attack a weed, but organic weed management is less harmful for the environment.

Instructions

  1. Corn Gluten

    • 1

Obtain corn gluten meal from a feed store. Corn gluten meal is a byproduct of milling corn. It is primarily used in livestock feed.

    • 2

Spread corn gluten pellets over your driveway in April with a rake and shovel at a rate of 20 lbs. per 1,000 square feet.

    • 3

Water the pellets lightly to activate the corn gluten. The product will prevent weed seeds from germinating in your driveway, but will not prevent established weeds or runners.

    • 4

Spread the corn gluten meal pellets over your driveway again in August.

    Boiling Weeds

    • 5

Fill a stock pot with water. Place the stock pot on a burner and turn the burner on.

    • 6

Pull the stock pot from the stove using pot holders when the water reaches a rolling boil.

    • 7

Carry the stock pot outdoors and pour the boiling water over weeds in your driveway. Be careful not to spill or pour boiling water on you. The water will boil the weeds and kill them as well as the roots in the soil for several inches deep.
